Expert/critical comments on the session

Professor Emeritus Dr. R. K. Mishra

It was due to Dr. Mrs. Meeta Shrivastava's inability to attend the session that Professor R. K. Mishra was requested to provide his valuable comments based on his vast clinical experience.

Commenting on the above:

  1. Pilocarpine is no longer a favored drug in the treatment of POAG. However since the incidence of Narrow or Closed angle glaucoma is quite high in Indian eyes the drug may not be disregarded.
  2. Bimatoprost is an excellent drugs, however the patient must be educated about the side effects, especially about the tendency to cause "redness" and "eyelash growth". Darkening of the iris pigment may not be overlooked.
  3. When target intra-ocular pressure is not achieved by medications in the form of monotherapy or combination therapy never hesitate for surgery.
  4. The main drawback of Latanoprost being the requirement of low storage temperature.
  5. Topical Acetazolamide is of no use, however oral acetazolamide has its place in Glaucoma therapy.
